1991-1992 season

Anjum Khan Fahim Shah Minesh Parmar and Zulfi Ali were all student's at East Ham college, Played football regularly at lunch time at the KKensington pitch, which is now a Dr’s surgery.  The pitch being only big enough for 7-8 a side, soon became too small to cater for the huge numbers that started to turn out.

3.        Started to use Wansted flats, as it already had a pitch marked out and goals up and was available for free.

4.        From playing at Wansted Flats, we ended up playing minish’s-* cousins team, who then were known as the Ilford team and later joined the Asian Football League as Boca Juniors.

5.        The Ilford team knew baalams boys, later became Aztec, who were also from Ilford and they knew the North London Team(Kishor and Alum) – They later went on to become Real Madras

So the season progressed, with the teams playing each other on an adhoc basis, keeping a mental score, of who had won and how many times.

1992-1993 – The First Asian League

1.        Player/Manager Zulfi Ali – Suraj Basmati Asian Football League

2.        Club Captain Fahim Shah, Lifted the League Trophy on 18th July 1993.

3.        The then team was – Shiraz Malik, Zulfi Ali, Inthab Ahmed, Minesh Parmar, Asad Jalil, Anjum Khan, Fahim Shah, Khalil Daleel, Shabaz Sikander, Soyfur Rehman, Zabir Bashir, Mamoon Sidiq, Zabir Patel, Waqar Ahmed

4.        Top Goal scorers and club Forwards Anjum Khan and Shabaz Sikander, notched 32 goals between them

5.        Alum and Kishor from Real MAdras, Amjad from Santos, Aftab from Redstar and Zulfi from Ahle Sunnah(now London APSA) became good friends and apart from playing football, also socialised externally. From their social gatherings, an idea of their very own Asian league was formed.

6.        There were plenty of discussions about joining existing leagues, but as the players and organisers were very young and worried about the financial implications, paying for a pitch, paying for kits, goal nets, flags etc.

7.        They decided to make their own league, use places like wanstead flats, hackney marshes, leyton Marsh and Mill Hill Park as their home grounds.

8.        The birth of the Suraj Basmati Asian Football League came from a contact Zulfi Ali made with Chand Basmati Rice, in order to obtain sponsorship for his Club. The owners also had other companies and were willing to sponsor the League.

9.        The first ever Asian football league consisted of Ahle Sunnah, Walthanmstow Redstar, Santos, Wandsworth, kings, Real Madras, Boca Juniors, Aztec and Duke of Edingburgh. Note duke of Edingburgh and Kings were white boy teams, we didn’t mind mixing, just didn’t want the financial burdens of playing mainstream football.

10.     Kits were not compulsory, some teams had em some didn’t. One agreed person would ref from the home team. Games were always played in the afternoon, when no park keepers were about, sometimes park keepers were on site, but turned a blind eye as they saw the kids in rags, trying to play ball.

12.     Ahle Sunnah(London APSA) won the league by 8 clear points, without losing a single game –

1993-1994

1.        Ahle Sunnah – runners up. Suraj basmati Asian Football League

2.        Player Manager Zulfi Ali

3.        Captain Fahim Shah

5.        The Team notched a phenomenal 109 goals that season – what do you expect without referees.

6.        Top Goal scorers, Unsul Kerrai and Shabaz Sikander, scored 63 goals between them

7.        Knocked out of the Semis by Redstar 3-2 , where Nisar’s dad came on to fight Khalil with  cricket Bat.

8.        The happy times were over, without proper referees and without kits, the League was managed well in that first year without much incident

9.        1993 proved to be a lot more difficult as the lack of experience in running such an organisation shone through.

10.     More Teams had joined, the league now consisted of 12 teams, Red Star , Ahle Sunnah Upton park, Santos, Aztec, Duke OF Edingburgh, Boca Juniors, New Ventus, S.A.S, Real Madras, Kings and Gapelle

11.     Gapelle left after a bust up with Santos 6 games into the season. The Gapelle Manager Naseem Saleemi, went on to make his own league(how Typical). The laurentian life Asian league

12.     Led by the academically, well accquired, Aftab Ahmed, Redstar won the League 6 points clear of Ahle Sunnah(London APSA)

13.     Upton Park won the first and last ever Edenfine cup, Held at the Golfers in Beckton, Which is now an housing estate – PICTURES available.

14.     Got a table as well

15.     The laurentian life Asian league winners were A Team with Runners up Gapelle.

1994-1995

In July of 1995, the Exec Committee of Suraj Basmati Asian Football League took an important and unselfish decision of merging with the League created by Naseem saleemi.  Even though the Suraj Basmait League had more teams than the Laurentian Life League, it was considered better to work together to make a bigger, more competitive and more successful League. Both parties had the same goal of trying to progress Asian football, synergy took place and Eastern Eye were back down to promoting the one Asian Football League. But with two divisions totaling 28 teams

1.        Ahle Sunnah(London APSA) came fifth in the Laurentian Life Asian Football League

PAKISTAN TOUR (right)

Ahle Sunnah, Wanstead Wanderers and Redstar were all involved in sending players to Pakistan via APSA a sports organisation who was trying to promote football amongst primarily the Pakistani Community. Their aim was to take British born Pakistanis, to their country of origin and at the same time to promote the game.

This proved to be the incubation period for London APSA. The two Ahle Sunnah Managers Anjum and Zulfi, spent many a night together in hotels and on coaches, at dinners and night clubs and formulated an exquisite plan to take Ahle Sunnah to new heights.

Immediately on return to England, they began gathering the players, enough to accommodate two teams. They formed another team for the Club and changed the name to APSA, LONDON APSA. A great friendship and mutual respect had been developed  with the orgganisors of the Pakistan trip and it was felt that adopting their name and helping them to carry out work in London will be a positive partnership. Alas that was not to be as the organisors of the Pakistan trip folded the organisation soon after the return journey.
